You’ve probably heard of love languages in the context of personal relationships. Well, guess what? Your donors have them too. The key is understanding what kind of appreciation makes each donor feel valued beyond just a transaction, because when you meet donors where they are and speak their language, you create deeper, longer-lasting connections that go far beyond the gift.

Let’s break down five of the most common donor love languages and how you can put each one into practice.

1. Words of affirmation

For some donors, nothing beats being told they’ve made a difference. These supporters light up when they get a sincere thank-you, not just a receipt. A warm phone call, a handwritten note, or even a short email that says “you made this happen” can go a long way.
The key is authenticity. Skip the generic “thanks for your support” language and tell them exactly what their gift helped make possible. Be specific. Be personal. Make them feel like a hero, not just a line in a spreadsheet.

2. Quality time

Donors who value quality time want to see the mission in action. They appreciate invitations to behind-the-scenes tours, coffee chats with your leadership, or even casual town halls where they can learn more, and ask questions.
You don’t have to roll out a red carpet. Just make space. The chance to spend time with your team or hear directly from program participants helps them feel like they’re part of something, not just funding it from the outside.

3. Acts of service

These donors feel most appreciated when you follow through. It’s sending that impact update you promised, following up on a project they supported, or responding promptly to a question. Service-oriented donors value reliability, consistency, and thoughtful follow-up. Showing this type of donor love means anticipating their needs, delivering on your word, and proving that their time and trust matter.

4. Gifts

A small token can leave a big impression. It’s not about the swag, it’s about the thought. Sure, a branded mug is nice, but a personalized impact update with their name, or a printed photo from a project they helped fund? That’s what makes it memorable. It tells the donor they weren’t just a transaction. You remembered them. You saw them.

5. In-person touch points

For some donors, a firm handshake at an in-person meeting builds a deep connection. Of course, this depends on comfort and context, but real-life moments matter. Delivering an award, greeting them at an event, or personally dropping off a thank-you gift can leave a lasting impression.
Ultimately, donor love languages aren’t about grand gestures. They’re about small, consistent actions that honour a donor’s gift of time, money, or trust. When you understand what resonates with your donors and make a habit of showing up in meaningful ways, they don’t just stick around; they grow with you.

Know your donors. Speak their language. And keep showing up with care, clarity, and intention.
