Those who lead nonprofits generally tend to serve long tenures – terms measured in decades rather than in years – and many could not identify a successor if their chief executives suddenly departed.
The Queen Elizabeth Hospital Foundation in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, underwent a successful succession planning and transition, replacing a CEO who had led the organization for more than 20 years.
Since 1975, PAL has served over 1,200 print-challenged individuals across Canada, but—like many not-for-profits across Canada—PAL was having trouble fundraising over the summer months. To help spur donations, PAL’s board and staff decided to participate in the initial Great Canadian Giving Challenge in 2015.
