Marie Wilson, one of the Commissioners of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, has often reminded us that reconciliation must include all peoples on this land, “it is a process in between and within Aboriginal families, churches, governments and all Canadians”. Increasingly Canadians are understanding that they have a role to play in creating a new relationship.
Reconciliation is trending. Many of us in the non-profit world are looking to activate our role in moving our collective forward in a respectful and just direction. Despite the resounding interest to learn, acknowledge, and understand more about truth and reconciliation, taking that first step is daunting. Here is the question - How can we take the first step despite the hesitancy and risk? The answer is simple - listen and learn through online participation.
Indigenous youth are proportionally the largest and fastest growing population in Ontario. Many are embarking on journeys to deepen connections to their communities and cultural traditions. At the same time, there is growing interest from organizations, funders, and other supporters to participate in reconciliation and learn how to better support Indigenous youth on their journey. The Ontario Indigenous Youth Partnership Project (OIYPP) is a unique program where young Indigenous voices guide and shape the partnership. This approach allows OIYPP to better meet the needs of Indigenous youth who directly influence its direction.
